Setting out from a distinction between special events and everyday life, you will investigate fundamental kinds of performative events, including play, ritual, work and carnival, developing an understanding of culture as performance. You will learn and apply ethnographic approaches to a range of contemporary case studies.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Demonstrate ability to apply observational methodologies to a case study of cultural performance;
  • LO2. Develop and apply analytical methodologies to that case study;
  • LO3. Critically engage with theoretical debates about performance and cultural theory;
  • LO4. Develop writing skills appropriate to the description and interpretation of embodied practice and performance.
