Art is created in a complex cultural field, the effects of which influence and shape the work itself. This unit develops an understanding of theatrical production in Australia, using Bourdieu's sociological theory, and practically, as students create viable performing arts companies, covering production management, budgeting and programming.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. understand and apply sociological theory and methodology to the field of cultural production in contemporary Australia
  • LO2. understand your own place in the field of cultural production as a complex function of education, socio-economic, gender and cultural background and experience
  • LO3. understand and be able to function productively in the field of theatre and performance-making in Australia
  • LO4. collaborate to plan, budget, manage and pitch a performance-making company.
