PRFM5901: Critical Theory and Performance

The discipline of Performance Studies has drawn upon a wide range of theoretical positions and resources, from semiotics to New Historicism, cultural studies, feminism, psychoanalysis, discourse theory, deconstruction, phenomenology and hermeneutics. This unit functions as an advanced reading seminar in which you will consider some key theoretical texts and examine how they have been applied to the analysis of performance.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. develop an historical understanding of what we call critical theory
  • LO2. explore how such theories have informed the field of Performance Studies
  • LO3. develop and apply an understanding of the key issues underpinning the critical theoretical project within the discipline
  • LO4. develop relevant strategies for the planning, drafting, revising of a long essay, and illustrate appropriate understandings of academic style and writing skills
  • LO5. bring together a number of core methodological skills constituting the discipline of performance studies.
