PSYC5318: Mental Health in Clinical Contexts

2026 unit information

Mental health conditions affect individuals across the lifespan and within all communities. This unit provides an in-depth examination of major mental health conditions, focusing on their causes, diagnosis, and treatment within a culturally responsive and evidence-based framework. Using a biopsychosocial approach, you will explore the assessment and management of conditions such as anxiety, mood disorders, psychosis, substance use, eating and personality disorders, as well as childhood and neurodevelopmental disorders. Cultural, social, and ethical considerations are integrated throughout. Drawing on lived experience accounts and real-world case studies, you will critically engage with the complexities of mental health practice and reflect on the challenges of delivering inclusive, person-centred care. The unit supports the development of conceptual understanding and applied skills essential for further professional training in psychology.
