This unit covers the scientist/practitioner model as the epistemological engine of evidence-based practice. Principles of measurement, psychometrics, assessment and evaluation inform a review of theory and models relevant to vocational assessment. Associated tools and strategies are profiled. Application of thinking processes, procedural steps, and tools are integrated into case study and simulation activities.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. compare and contrast the definitions of testing and assessment
  • LO2. identify the tools of psychological and educational assessment, including tools utilising computer technology
  • LO3. list the assumptions inherent in assessment
  • LO4. describe the parties impacted by assessment
  • LO5. describe the types of settings where assessments are conducted
  • LO6. compute test scores and apply relevant psychometric statistics
  • LO7. describe methods of establishing evidences for reliability and validity, including the use of Standard Error of Measurement (SEM)
  • LO8. complete written assignments that demonstrate competency in the above standards
  • LO9. prepare and present a test critique of a measure of choice using databases like the Mental Measurement Yearbook, test catalogues, test manuals, peer-reviewed journals and Internet-based resources
  • LO10. construct an integrated assessment report based upon selected tests that will be self-administered and scored during the quarter.
