RLST3611: Secular Religion: Faith in Modernity

2024 unit information

In this unit religion is the lens to examine the modern secular and civil condition. This will include the faith structures that lie behind the rise of the nation state, democracy, political utopias and such ideals or myths that have driven dominant models of society. This analysis will also examine secular space not only as a realm of ultimate and national concern but also as a site for religious speculation. Theories about charisma, apocalypticism and conversion will be examined in consideration of how they have utilised in the service of political and social ideologies.

  • LO1. 1. This unit takes students deep into the philosophy of the sacred dimensions of the secular and asks them to apply their own sophisticated methodologies to the analysis of the atmospheres of the everyday world about them.
  • LO2. 2. Novel theoretical and practical problems in the study of religion are re-framed to challenge students to apply their critical tools for the study of sacred things to immediate real-world problems.
  • LO3. 3. This unit further develops cultural competence in the Religion minor/major by expanding the student's view of secularity as an "Ultimate Concern" in relation to other, older, religious claims.
  • LO4. 4. This unit encourages the development of complex methodological tools by an understanding of processes used in other humanities disicplines (the study of atmospheres, philosophical analysis, phenomenology and other tools).
