SEXH5419: Public Health Aspects of HIV and STIs

2020 unit information

The unit aims to provide a public health perspective on the impact of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and HIV. On completion of this unit, students will be able to understand: (i) The underlying principles of surveillance systems used to monitor STIs and HIV; (ii) The core risk activity groups involved HIV and STI transmission; (iii) The epidemiology of STIs and HIV and how it varies within and between societies; (iv) The public health impact of STIs and HIV; and (v) Effective preventative strategies at individual and community levels. Course content will include an introduction to the basic biology of HIV and STIs; epidemiology and surveillance methods; impact of HIV and STIs on vulnerable at-risk populations; prevention technologies and policy approaches.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. understand the epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus in Australia and overseas and appreciate how their incidence and prevalence differs across population groups, time and location
  • LO2. understand the historical and contemporary impact of sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus on both individuals and the community nationally and abroad
  • LO3. describe key and vulnerable populations, as well as the legal, social and cultural barriers to service provision amongst these populations
  • LO4. explore the history and current state of public health strategies for prevention of sexually transmitted infections and human immunodeficiency virus nationally and abroad
  • LO5. discuss the legal issues facing people living with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome including issues around discrimination, disclosure of HIV status and immigration.
