Unit of study_
SLSS1001: Law, Policy and Society I
2027 unit information
This unit of study introduces students to socio-legal studies: the study of law as it is lived, experienced, and contested. The unit explores how law shapes everyday life, how institutions such as policing and courts operate in practice, and how power, inequality, culture and relationships influence legal outcomes, including through Indigenous law and legal pluralism. Students develop foundational socio-legal concepts and skills, including observation, critical analysis, and the use of evidence. The unit introduces how policy is designed and informs the development of legislation, equipping students with analytical tools to understand law's role in organising social life.
