This unit explores different theoretical perspectives on social justice relating to income and wealth distribution, identity, social recognition, law and rights. It applies these to contemporary examples, including income and wealth disparities, race and gender inequality, disability rights, the environment and treatment of non-human animals.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. understand the concept of social justice and major debates concerning what social justice means and requires
  • LO2. critically engage and debate different theories of a just society
  • LO3. evaluate the ethics and politics of different models of distribution
  • LO4. be familiar with some major debates about social justice in relation to topics such as race, gender, and Indigenous rights
  • LO5. evaluate how different laws and legal arrangements enhance or undermine social justice.
