This unit provides theoretical and conceptual insights into socio-legal research, so students can reflect critically on their own research processes via the analysis of substantive topics, including policing, legal secrecy, surveillance, critical discourse analysis of race, sex and gender, and matters of indigenous law.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. gain insight into a range of complex socio-legal theories and their possible applications
  • LO2. acquire confidence in using complex theories and evaluating the usefulness of different approaches
  • LO3. build analytical skills by applying different socio-legal concepts, methods and theories to a range of novel research problems
  • LO4. confidently use different theories to elucidate aspects of your own dissertations and resolve socio-legal problems.
