Environment, Country and Culture explores the intersection of cultural and environmental knowledge systems with a particular focus on the Aboriginal understanding of Country. In the unit students will demonstrate how built environment interventions can contribute to the restoration of degraded landscapes, and contribute to healthy, resilient and culturally meaningful places. The unit will explore contemporary sustainability challenges at different scales, critically evaluating the limitations of conventional, extractive and ecologically destructive approaches to urban development. Students will develop a capacity for respectful engagement with First Peoples of Australia and equivalent knowledge-holders and custodians in other parts of the world, and will learn how to apply nature-based, knowledge-led and culturally grounded approaches to values assessment, land use decision-making and urban design.
