USSC6919: Hollywood vs. Netflix

This unit examines the Hollywood studio film before and after the Internet. It studies Hollywood's power as a cultural symbol, its relationship to film production, cultures of reception, and digital distribution. This will include not only the analysis of feature films but also the ideas of filmmakers, theorists and media scholars. Questions of technology, authorship and audience will be a focus of the unit.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. To analyse the impact of streaming media on studio film production and the cultural influence of Hollywood;
  • LO2. To critically assess key films, theories and discourses informing the evolution of American cinema in the twentieth century and twenty-first century;
  • LO3. To interrogate filmic narratives and myths foundational to Hollywood film production and spectatorship;
  • LO4. To engage Hollywood and independent American cinema as an emergent cultural, technological and political phenomenon
