To provide students with knowledge about educational approaches and strategies for teaching wind instruments to individuals and small groups. Topics will include creative teaching of beginner to advanced wind players.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. expand on what you have learned through your own musical journey as a student, and now putting on the teacher’s hat to find your own teaching narrative and style
  • LO2. identify the entry point of the student, whether at a beginner, intermediate or advanced level and be able to keep the student motivated
  • LO3. confidently articulate how to address the basic foundations of tone, good postural habits, technique, articulation, dynamic control, rhythm and phrasing
  • LO4. identify the key challenges in execution which need to be addressed and be able to provide strategies for improvement
  • LO5. confidently design a purposeful, progressive and engaging lesson plan for each and every student from the first lesson
  • LO6. ‘own’ what you teach and depending on where you are at in your personal teaching journey, be able to expertly guide the student.
