EDUP4081: Primary Mathematics Specialisation A
2026 unit information
This unit of study is the first in a pair of units providing BEd(Primary) students with the necessary requirements for a specialisation in Mathematics. It is designed to strengthen mathematical discipline knowledge and pedagogy in targeted, difficult-to-learn (and teach) content areas from a K-8 perspective. The unit focuses on the development of conceptual understanding in problematic aspects of Number and Algebra, and the use of digital technologies for mathematical representations and Working Mathematically. Connections between theory, research and practice will be exemplified through close links with the fourth year professional experience placement.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. demonstrate advanced development of specialised mathematical content knowledge in number and algebra, and pedagogy for enhancing student engagement and conceptual understanding
- LO2. synthesise current research, curriculum and policy documents to inform the on-going improvement of effective practices for teaching mathematics
- LO3. demonstrate confidence and competency in the implementation of a range of effective teaching approaches including the integration of technology to engage students in working mathematically
- LO4. demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in planning for teaching in mathematics at classroom and school levels
- LO5. demonstrate advanced development of professional confidence, interpersonal communication and discipline-specific curriculum leadership skills
- LO6. critically reflect on issues in mathematics education, and consider them from multiple perspectives.
