If you enter a University campus or are in range of its Wi-Fi networks and are carrying an enabled device which connects to University network, the following personal information will be collected:

• Unikey or Username
• IP address and MAC address
• Building and location (nearest Wi-Fi point)
• Connection and Disconnection times
• Bandwidth used (Wi-Fi logs).

If configured, your device will connect automatically when you are in range of the networks signal.  The Wi-Fi networks are in use twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.   

The University collects personal information through the Wi-Fi networks for a range of purposes including but not limited to the following:

• To enable authorised users to access the internet and accessible systems
• For recording details of persons on its premises, including:
  • the identity of individuals, and
  • time of access
• For analytical purposes to:
  • map and record trends that occur, and
  • plan and distribute resources
• For investigative or legal purposes, including for investigations in accordance with its rules, policies and procedures
• To support and assess student welfare, when requested by a senior manager in Safer Communities and Student Life business areas
• For planning, prevention and response or recovery for serious incident and crisis management purposes.

Wi-Fi logs are only accessed by authorised users, including Information and Communications Technology, Central Operation Services, Institutional Analytic and Planning staff and contractors providing services to the University.

Disclosure of Wi-Fi log information outside the University is in accordance with the University’s Privacy Policy and Procedures.

The University has security measures in place to safeguard personal information from misuse, and unauthorised access, use, modification or disclosure, including those in the University’s Cyber Security Policy 2019 and Acceptable Use of ICT Resources Policy 2019. We retain your personal information in accordance with our Recordkeeping Policy 2017.
