Health and safety

Our vision for a safer, healthier and happier campus
The safety and wellbeing of our staff, students and partners is fundamental to our pursuit of excellence in education and research.

We aim to create a positive safety culture – to enable our people to thrive and realise their full potential as part of a healthy and engaged community. We embed safety and wellbeing by:

  • promoting it to our community through well-targeted, systematic programs (see below)
  • preventing fatalities and serious injuries
  • reducing the frequency and impacts of injury and ill health
  • enhancing the overall wellbeing of all our staff, students and partners.

The implementation of our Safety Management System across the University helps to provide a systematic approach to managing the health and safety of our people. It supports legal compliance and improves our safety culture and performance.

Our safety targets are set yearly by the University Executive and monitored quarterly. We monitor our progress against a Positive Safety Index, which aggregates 10 separate measures.

Our contractors and partners are expected to meet the highest applicable safety standards at all times.

Our general requirements are that they:

  • take reasonable care for their own safety
  • comply with reasonable instructions
  • adopt and use safe work procedures, including personal protective equipment and clothing when required
  • familiarise themselves with University safety standards, and the relevant health and safety policies and procedures
  • report hazards, injuries and incidents to their University representative
  • participate in safety and wellbeing induction, training and discussion
  • cooperate with safety inspections, audits and investigations
  • respond appropriately to emergencies.
