As Australian cities grow, the demand for sustainable housing solutions has never been more urgent. But new buildings are not necessarily the best solution.
Associate Professor Sandra Loschke at the University of Sydney’s School of Architecture, Design and Planning is seeking to make building renewal a mainstream strategy.
This approach aims to transform underperforming buildings into larger, low-carbon, high-quality living spaces, offering a sustainable alternative to new construction while reducing environmental impact and enhancing community well-being.
As the urgency of climate action intensifies, it is crucial for stakeholders—including government officials, industry leaders, and community advocates—to unite in prioritising green housing redesign initiatives
Associate Professor in Architecture
As Australia faces a deepening rental crisis, Dr Sophia Maalsen is exploring how digital technologies could reshape the housing landscape.
Maalsen’s research focuses on the emerging field of Proptech—technologies and platforms designed for the property sector—and how these innovations impact renting, data collection, and the power dynamics between tenants and landlords.
Affordable housing is becoming increasingly out of reach for essential workers — those who support our communities in healthcare, education, policing, and emergency services.
Research led by academics at the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning reveals this stark reality, showing that essential workers can no longer afford to live within reasonable proximity to Sydney and Melbourne’s CBDs.
In high-cost housing markets, key workers can struggle to find suitable housing, leading to recruitment and retention challenges
Lecturer in Urban and Regional Planning
At a time when Australia's housing crisis calls for innovative solutions, researchers at the University of Sydney are shedding light on overlooked approaches within our existing public housing that could inform the future of higher density living.
Led by academics from the School of Architecture, Design, and Planning, the project Public Housing: Lessons for Higher Density Living examines decades of public housing history to identify valuable insights for sustainable and people-centred housing.
“Few people realise that, in Australia, public housing has been a locus of innovation and experimentation for the design, planning and construction of higher density housing for a hundred years,” explains Associate Professor Cameron Logan, one of the project’s researchers.
