Statement in Support of the Voice to Parliament
Dr. Beatriz Carrillo Garcia, Associate Dean Indigenous Strategy and Services at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, said the faculty was pleased to support the yes vote.
“Prof. Lisa Adkins (Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) and I recognise our Faculty’s collective responsibility to advocate for the rights of First Nations Peoples and to empower their voices, and are thus proud to announce the Faculty’s strong support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart and a ‘Yes’ vote in the upcoming Referendum.”
Statement of Support
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences sits on Gadigal Land, Gadinurada (Gadi Country), belonging to the Gadigal (Gadi People). Sovereignty over this Land was never ceded or surrendered. This is a place of First Nations knowledge-keeping and storytelling.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences wholeheartedly supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart and its call for Voice, Treaty, and Truth. We acknowledge Gadigal Land as a place of knowledge sharing, storytelling, and connection to Country, and recognise our collective responsibility to advocate for the rights of First Nations Peoples and to empower Indigenous voices.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences strongly endorses a ‘Yes’ vote in the upcoming Referendum on October the 14th to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice in the Australian Constitution. By providing independent, expedient, and continual advice on Indigenous matters to the Parliament, the Voice represents a vital step toward the self-determination and recognition of First Nations sovereignty.
A support for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament by the Australian people can concomitantly contribute to the repair and renewal of the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Science’s position is inspired by the activism of our First Nations alumnus Dr. Charles Perkins, who led the 1965 Freedom Rides. It arises from consultation with our First Nations colleagues and students, and non-Indigenous colleagues, in collaboration with and with the support of the University’s Indigenous Strategy and Services portfolio, as well as with other colleagues from across the University. We are deeply committed to walking with our First Nations communities and developing a university environment where First Nations Peoples and cultures are central to our teaching, learning and community engagement.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences recognises the diverse perspectives on the proposed Indigenous Voice to Parliament, and respects individuals’ decision to vote in accordance with their values and principles at the Referendum. Concurrently, the Faculty acknowledges the challenging nature of conversations about the Referendum and the Voice, and thus encourages a respectful dialogue that prioritises the safety of First Nations Peoples.
We strongly encourage our community to be informed on this important issue as every vote is critical.

Este es un lugar para el mantenimiento del conocimiento y la narración de historias de las Primeras Naciones.

La Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences della University of Sydney si trova a Gadigal Land, Gadinurada (Paese di Gadi), appartenente al Gadigal (Popolo Gadi). La sovranità su questa Terra non fu mai ceduta né concessa. Questo è un luogo di conservazione della conoscenza e di narrazione delle Prime Nazioni.
La Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences sostiene con tutto il cuore la Dichiarazione del Cuore di Uluru (“Uluru Statement from the Heart”) e il suo appello alla Voce, al Trattato e alla Verità. Riconosciamo Gadigal Land come luogo di condivisione della conoscenza, narrazione e connessione con il Paese e riconosciamo la nostra responsabilità collettiva nel difendere i diritti dei popoli delle Prime Nazioni e nel dare potere alle voci degli Indigeni.
