First in Family Mentor Program Launch

On Tuesday 6 May, alumni mentors and student mentees gathered in the Michael Spence Building function space to celebrate the launch of the First in Family Mentor Program, an initiative of the School of Economics at the University of Sydney, now it’s in seventh year.

Interim Head of School Professor Stephen Whelan opened proceedings by welcoming the new cohort of mentees and offering sincere thanks to the program’s dedicated mentors. He extended thanks to those academic colleagues present at the launch event, and acknowledged the vital role that professional staff play in the program’s growth and continued success.

2025 also marks a significant program milestone—the admission of the 50th student mentee into the First in Family Mentor Program. In his speech, Professor Whelan recognised the difficulties students can face when they are the first to attend university, even in preliminary discussions about career paths and opportunities after school. The importance of the mentor role becomes clear as they not only bring practical advice to their student partner, but also personal insights and invaluable experience, resulting in lasting impact on our first in family students.

Following the formalities, guests enjoyed drinks and refreshments while networking and connecting with fellow mentees, mentors, and professional and academic colleagues from the School.

The School is truly honoured to have our alumni community dedicate their time and expertise to the program, which remains deeply committed to strengthening connections and fostering a strong sense of belonging for the students involved. Looking ahead, mentees will meet with their mentors on a monthly basis, submit reflective journals to capture and process their experiences, and participate in a mid-year check-in as well as an end-of-program celebration.

The First in Family Mentor Program continues to demonstrate the School of Economics’ deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and student success - ensuring all students, regardless of background, have the opportunity to thrive.

The School of Economics is always looking for alumni mentors to join the program. Reach out to us at any time to connect.
