Our objectives

The Sydney Character Initiative is dedicated to researching, educating and leading for and with:

  • The civic character of belonging through courtesy, civility, and respect.
  • The performance character that fulfils potential through purpose, persistence, and reflection.
  • The moral character to do good and right in our world through honesty, courage, and humility.

We believe that the more we feel as though we belong, the more likely we are to fulfil our potential. The more we feel as though we belong and fulfil our potential, the more likely we are to do good and right in the world.

Our approach

We are a bold new venture of the Sydney School of Education and Social Work and the Sydney Academy of Teaching Excellence, grounded in the living history of 175 years of leadership by the University of Sydney, Australia’s oldest university.

Through our collaboration with schools, tertiary and residential communities, industry, youth impact organisations, and social enterprises, we will:

By engaging students, teachers, residential educators, and executive leaders in its programs, who are better equipped to contribute in their communities, the Sydney Character Initiative will nurture people capable of leading for and with character.

By sharing resources on character formation, education, and leadership, the Sydney Character Initiative will influence wider public and professional discourse at local, national, and international levels.

These partnerships across Australia, the South Pacific, and internationally will help consolidate and expand the imperative for character education across society and ensure the long-term impact of the Sydney Character Initiative.
