Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

You can offer either a paid internship tailored to your organisation’s needs or a placement coordinated through the relevant faculty. Paid roles are managed directly by you, while vocational placements follow faculty requirements and may be unpaid if approved.

Find more information here

The timing of your internship will depend on your organization's needs, resourcing, and capacity to host a student. Student engagement is strongest at the start of each semester and during mid-semester or inter-semester breaks.

  • Paid internships can be offered year-round and do not need to align with the academic calendar, allowing flexibility in both duration and scope. Find more information here
  • Unpaid internships for academic credit can also be arranged during semester or in the winter and summer breaks, depending on the requirements of the relevant academic unit. Contact the relevant faculty here.

Paid internships must comply with Fair Work guidelines, similar to other paid employment arrangements. Unlike casual employment, internships usually centre on a defined project and skill development, often helping identify future talent for ongoing roles.

An internship can be lawfully unpaid if it is approved by the University and/or for academic credit. Please refer to the Fair Work website for further information about paid and unpaid internships.

The Careers Centre offers a variety of services to help your organization build brand awareness, connect with students, and promote your opportunities.

  • From Careers Fairs and Employer Information Sessions to targeted email campaigns and customized events, we can support you to engage with talented students in meaningful ways.

Visit our Employer Portal to learn more about how we can help you reach the right candidates and showcase what makes your organization unique.

During Internship

Yes. Internships can be completed in-person, remotely, or in a hybrid format, as long as the intern receives appropriate supervision and support.

Fair Work requires that remote interns still receive the same protections, supervision standards, and working conditions as any employee. Learn more via Fair Work.

Contact the relevant faculty to confirm working arrangements for vocational placement.

Our team provides tailored support for paid internships, including;

  • guidance on program structure,
  • promotion and brand visibility,
  • CareerHub job ad support, targeted student engagement,
  • and shortlisting assistance depending on your engagement level.

We can also help connect you with the right students. Contact us here to get started.

For vocational placements, please contact the relevant faculty for information and support.

For paid internships, you are responsible for WHS, workers’ compensation and insurance obligations, as you would be for any paid employee under Fair Work guidelines

For vocational placements, WHS and insurance arrangements differ and are managed through the relevant faculty. Contact Faculty here.

  • Provide a clear onboarding process, a well-scoped project, and regular check-ins or feedback.
  • Meaningful responsibility and structured supervision help interns contribute effectively and gain valuable experience.

Post Internship

For paid internships, formal feedback isn’t required but is encouraged, as it helps strengthen your future internship programs and supports the student’s development.

For vocational placements, any required evaluations are outlined by the relevant faculty to meet learning and assessment needs. Contact Faculty here.

Yes.

Many organisations use internships as a low-risk way to identify future talent, with students often transitioning into ongoing, part-time, or graduate roles after their placement.

Internships can help you assess a student’s skills, fit, and potential before offering longer-term opportunities.

Our Careers Centre team can support you at any stage of the paid internship process. You can explore employer resources on our Employer Portal or contact our Industry Development team directly here.

For vocational placements, please contact the relevant faculty for information and support. Contact Faculty here.
