Who's eligible
You must:
- identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015
- be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree with the University of Sydney Law School
- demonstrate financial need.
Note: In the event the scholarship is not awarded to a commencing student in any given year, students currently enrolled in their first year of a LLB at the University of Sydney will be able to apply.
Background
This scholarship was established in 1996 by a number of donations made in memory of Victoria Jane Barclay Gollan. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student to study law at the University of Sydney.
1. Background
a. Established in 1996 by a number of donations made in memory of Victoria Jane Barclay Gollan. The purpose of the Scholarship is to assist an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student in the study of law at the University of Sydney.
2. Eligibility
a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant being enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree with the University of Sydney Law School.
b. Applicants must identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015.
c. Applicants who apply under the Gadigal program at the University of Sydney are also eligible.
d. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.
3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. academic merit and
II. personal statement demonstrating financial need.
b. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of a selection committee consisting of the Head of School and Dean of the University of Sydney Law School, or their nominee, at least one other member of staff from the School, and a representative of the Gadigal Centre at the University of Sydney.
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $1,500 and will be paid as a one-off payment after the first relevant census date of the recipient’s commencing semester.
b. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the relevant Head of School and Dean or their nominee, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.
c. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
d. No other amount is payable.
5. Termination
a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
IV. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or
V. fail to meet any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
