The Bachelor of Economics (Honours) is an additional year of (full-time) undergraduate study following completion of the Bachelor of Economics (or equivalent). It provides high-archieving students an opportunity to develop research skills in economics or econometrics by undertaking advanced-level coursework and conducting a supervised but independent research project. The honours year adds greater depth to athe Bachelor of Economics and is a pathway to both employment as a professional economist and higher degree by research (e.g., PhD) studies.

Students complete:

  • five honours-level coursework units of study of their choice that extend the knowledge and skills acquired in their undergraduate degree; and
  • a substantial independent research project on an approved topic of their choice, culminating in the submission of a thesis of approximately 15,000 words. Students work on their thesis throughout the course, under the supervision of an academic staff member with expertise in the chosen area. The research should identify an area for investigation which makes a relevant contribution to knowledge.

Economics

Students intending to undertake Honours in Economics should follow the Advanced Economics (also known as 'pre-honours') program. The program serves as a pathway to Honours, providing high-level training in micro- and macroeconomics, mathematical economics, and applied econometrics. This prepares students for the advanced-level coursework and independent research that they will undertake in the honours year (Year 4).

Graduates of other institutions should possess an equivalent level of preparation.

Please refer to the Economics subject area page for detailed admission criteria.

Econometrics

Students intending to undertake Honours in Econometrics should complete the Econometrics major and advanced 2000-level units in micro- and macroeconomics (ECOS2901 and ECOS2902).

Graduates of other institutions should possess an equivalent level of preparation.

Please refer to the Econometrics subject area page for detailed admission criteria.
