Course resolutions

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 1  Course codes

2  Attendance pattern

(1) The attendance pattern in the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice is full time only.

3  Masters type

(1) The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice is a professional master's course, as defined by the Coursework Policy.

4  Faculty management

(1) Candidates will be under the general supervision of the Faculty of Medicine and Health for the duration of the degree.

5  Admission to candidature

(1) Admission to this course is on the basis of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including interstate and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program. English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English. Special admission pathways are open for mature aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. Applicants are ranked by merit according to the category of admission and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking. Details of all admission policies are found in the Coursework Rule and Coursework Policy.

(2) Students who have undertaken a year 12 qualification in Australia must meet the requirements set out in the Academic Board Admissions Prerequisite Standards, Mathematics, to be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice. Students seeking admission on the basis of preparation programs approved by the Academic Board under clause 15 of the Coursework Policy must demonstrate achievement in mathematics through:

(a) achieving a result which is considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent to: (i) a required NSW mathematics result; or (ii) a pass grade or higher in an approved mathematics prerequisite course; or

(b) completing other tertiary mathematical study which, in the opinion of the relevant delegate in the faculty or University school responsible for the award course, is equivalent to a pass or higher grade in an approved mathematics prerequisite course.

6  Requirements for award

(1) The units of study that may be taken for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice are set out in:

(a) Table A for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice

(b) Table S of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees; and

(c) Table O of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

(2) To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice, a candidate must complete 240 credit points comprising:

(a) 48 credit points of 1000-level core units from Table A;

(b) 42 credit points of 2000-level core units from Table A;

(c) 6 credit points of elective units from Table O or Table S;

(d) 48 credit points of 3000-level core units from Table A;

(e) 48 credit points of 4000-level core units from Table A;

(f) 48 credit points of 5000-level core units from Table A; and

(g) 1,824 hours of supervised practice in the Master of Pharmacy Practice.

(h) Candidates must maintain a FMHHWAM [greater than or equal to] 65 across years two to four to qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) degree.

(i) Candidates who do not maintain a FMHHWAM [greater than or equal to] 65 across years two to four may qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Pharmacy.

(3) FMHHWAM means the Faculty of Medicine and Health Honours Weighted Average Mark calculated from the results for all 2000, 3000, and 4000 level units attempted for the degree (weighted 2, 3, and 4 for their respective levels, with the Honours units of study given a weighting of 8 in this calculation).

7  Requirements for students prior to commencing clinical placements

(1) Student clearance for clinical placements

The New South Wales Ministry of Health requires that all students obtain clearance in order to undertake clinical placements. This involves a criminal record check according to NSW Health policy. Please refer to the University’s Placements web site for further information.

(2) Prohibited employment declaration

All students must complete a prohibited employment declaration as required by the NSW Commission for Children and Young People. Please refer to the University’s Placements web site for further information.

(3) Immunisation

All students must have evidence of vaccinations and immunisation against certain infectious diseases prior to undertaking clinical placements. The requirements are consistent with Australian public health policy and NSW Health guidelines.

(4) NSW Health Records and Information Privacy Act (2002)

Students must familiarise themselves with the content of the NSW Health Privacy Management Plan and comply with the NSW Ministry of Health Code of Conduct, NSW Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002 and Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998. 8  Progression

(1) These progression requirements should be read in conjunction with the relevant Unit of Study Outlines, Faculty Local Provisions and Faculty Resolutions.

(2) Details of assessment requirements in each year, including the structure, content and expected standards, are available for enrolled students in the Unit of Study Outlines, the Handbook and on the Learning Management System.

(3) In accordance with Faculty local provisions: Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Provisions 2019 and Faculty of Medicine and Health Professionalism Requirements Provisions 2019, candidates who demonstrate serious or repeated unprofessional behaviour may be required to show cause as to why their enrolment should be continued. Failure to show cause may result in exclusion from the course.

(4) Students must attend a minimum of 85% of compulsory classes (as defined in individual Unit of Study outlines, e.g. tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes and placements).

(5) Candidates must achieve a FMHHWAM [greater than or equal to] 65 across years two to four to continue in the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice.

(6) Candidates who do not achieve a FMHHWAM [greater than or equal to] 65 across all units in years two to four of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice may be awarded the Bachelor of Pharmacy, provided that they have met the requirements of this degree.

(7) Candidates who fail one unit of study in the first, second, or third year and who have an annual average mark (AAM) of [greater than or equal to] 65 for that year, may apply for a prerequisite waiver which would allow enrolment in the full complement of units of study in the following year, together with the failed unit of study.

9  Requirements for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) degree

(1) Integrated honours, involving a research project, is available to all students.

(2) To qualify for the award of honours a candidate must complete the requirements (192 credit points) of the four years of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice with a FMHHWAM [greater than or equal to] 65 across years two to four (inclusive).

(3) Honours in the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice is awarded in classes ranging from First Class to Third Class as specified in the Coursework Policy, and the Resolutions of the Faculty of Medicine and Health. The class of Honours is awarded based on a candidate’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Honours Weighted Average Mark (FMHHWAM).

10  Cross-institutional study

(1) Cross-institutional study is not available in the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice.

11  International exchange

(1) International exchange is permitted in the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy after gaining permission from the relevant delegate.

12  Award of the Master's degree

(1) Candidates will be awarded a single testamur for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice.

13  Course transfer

(1) A candidate may elect to complete the Bachelor of Pharmacy and Management (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree, instead of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice. Transfer to the Bachelor of Pharmacy and Management (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice in the future will require a new application for admission to candidature for that course and completion in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree. Students may elect to complete the Bachelor of Pharmacy or Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) in accordance with the resolutions governing those degrees, instead of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice.

(2) Admission to candidature in the Bachelor of Pharmacy or Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) is by transfer from the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy Practice, subject to the requirements of those resolutions.

14  Credit for previous study

(1) For units of study offered by the Sydney Pharmacy School (PHARXXXX), credit will usually not be granted for study completed more than five years before the time of first enrolment in the unit or course for which credit is sought. The requirements for the award of credit are as specified in Coursework Policy.

15  Commencement date of these resolutions

(1) These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January 2023.
