Course resolutions

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 2  Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for this course is full-time or part-time according to student choice.

3  Cross-faculty management

(1)  Students in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science (Extended) will be under the general supervision of the Faculty of Science.

(2)  The Dean of the Faculty of Science shall exercise authority in any matter concerned with the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science (Extended) not otherwise dealt with in these resolutions.

4  Embedded courses

(1)  The embedded courses in this sequence are:

(a) Diploma of Foundation Studies;

(b) Advanced Diploma of Foundation Studies; and

(c) Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science (Extended).

(2)  All students will be admitted to and enrolled in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science (Extended).

(3)  A student enrolled in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science (Extended) may, with the permission of the Associate Dean (Education), elect to discontinue study and graduate with a lower award from the embedded sequence, provided that:

(a) for the Diploma of Foundation Studies, the student has successfully completed 36 credit points as specified in the course resolutions for the Diploma of Foundation Studies;

(b) for the Advanced Diploma of Foundation Studies, the student has successfully completed 72 credit points as specified in the course resolutions for the Advanced Diploma of Foundation Studies.

(4)  Only the longest degree for which the student is eligible in the embedded sequence will be awarded.

5  Admission to candidature

(1)  Admission to this course is only available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, who meet the process outlined in the Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015.

(2)  Admission to this course will be on demonstrated potential for tertiary study to a standard sufficient to undertake the course as demonstrated in:

(a) A numeracy and literacy test; and

(b) A structured interview; and

(c) Evidence of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program; and

(d) A portfolio of written work or support material including a personal statement of intent for studying the course.

(3)  English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English.

(4)  Applicants are ranked on merit and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking. Details of admission policies are found in the Coursework Policy.

6  Requirements for award

(1)  Units of study that may be taken for the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science (Extended) are set out in:

(a) Table E for the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science (Extended);

(b) Table A for the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science (BLAS Table A);

(c) Table A for the Bachelor of Science (Bachelor of Science Table A);

(d) Table A for the Bachelor of Arts (Bachelor of Arts Table A);

(e) Table S of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees; and

(f) Table O of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

(2)  To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science (Extended), a student must successfully complete 168 credit points of units of study, comprising:

(a) 30 credit points of units of study from Table E comprising:

(i) 24 credit points of Foundation units of study;

(ii) A 6 credit point Cultural Capstone Project unit; 

(b) 12 credit points of Open Learning Environment units from Table O; and

(c) 36 credit points of Liberal Studies units from Table A from the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science including:

(i) 12 credit points of core units of study, ATHK1001 and WRIT1001

(ii) a minimum of 6 credit points of units of study from Part C Ethics;

(iii) 18 credit points of units of study from any of the six areas from the BLAS Table A, Parts A-F;

(iv) units of study chosen to satisfy these requirements cannot count towards the Science or Arts requirements outlined in (d) below;

(d) All students must complete either:

(i) A Science major from Table A from the Bachelor of Science; and: a minimum of 36 credit points of units of study from Table A from the Bachelor of Arts, which must include at least 12 credit points of Arts 2000- or 3000-level units of study.

(ii) An Arts major from Table A from the Bachelor of Arts; and a minimum of 36 credit points of units of study from Table A from the Bachelor of Science, which must include at least 12 credit points of 2000- or 3000-level units of study.

(e) A maximum of 12 credit points of Elective units of study from outside of Table A from the Bachelor of Arts and Table A from the Bachelor of Science may be taken from the Table S Elective list.

(f) Students must complete no more than 108 credit points of 1000-level units of study.

7  Majors and minors

(1)  The list of Bachelor of Science Table A majors available is specified in the course resolutions for the Bachelor of Science.

(a) Students choosing a Science major have the option of completing the Psychology program (which contains the Psychological sciences major).

(2)  The list of Bachelor of Arts Table A majors available is specified in the resolutions for the Bachelor of Arts.

(3)  Units of study counted towards a major may not count toward the Liberal Studies requirements described in Part 6 (2)(c) of these resolutions.

8  Cross-institutional study

Cross-institutional study is available in this course under conditions specified in the Resolutions of the Faculty of Science.

9  International mobility

The Faculty of Science encourages students in this course to participate in international exchange and global mobility programs as set out in the Resolutions of the Faculty of Science, provided that the progression requirements and timelines of the course Resolutions can be met.

10  Course transfer

A student may transfer from this course to the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science. Transferring students may only receive credit for any units taken from Table A of the Bachelor of Liberal Arts Science, Table O (Open Learning Environment), and for relevant units of study in accordance with the course resolutions for the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science.

11  Credit for previous study

Credit transfer is subject to the provisions of the Coursework Policy 2014 and the Resolutions of the Faculty of Science.

12  Transitional provisions

(1)  These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January 2024.

(2)  Students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January 2024 should complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement.
