Former United States President Jimmy Carter described 1970s American multiculturalist society as a “beautiful mosaic.”  Australia in the 2020s deserves that title even more.

Alas, multiculturalism has now become a target of political dissent. Multiculturalism enriches society with diverse languages, traditions, and perspectives.  It fosters creativity, innovation, and cultural understanding. It supports economic growth and strengthens social cohesion. Exposure to different cultures contributes to vibrant communities through shared cultural experiences. While multiculturalism can present challenges, including communication barriers, difficulties with social integration, and the risk of social tension if mutual understanding is not actively supported, its benefits far outweigh its potential disadvantages. We must build on our existing diversity and historic and geographic advantages and never return to the days of White Australia.

This panel discussion will see speakers address these topics from their scholarly, professional and personal perspectives, including language diversity, arts and media, education and public service. We aim to discern what Australia needs to do in order to reap the benefits of multiculturalism.
