In this workshop children will learn about epic cycles and myth-telling and will compare ancient Greek epics with songs, stories and cycles
In this action-packed kid’s drop-off workshop, we explore the epic stories of ancient Greece.
With Christopher Nolan’s film of The Odyssey in cinemas, we will see a new version of a very old tale. The story of the hero’s journey has captivated human for thousands of years in every culture on earth; the Homeric myths are just one of many versions of a story of a hero’s long journey home. Indeed, we can question if Odysseus is actually a hero at all, or just a human making many mistakes?
In this workshop children will learn about epic cycles and myth-telling and will compare ancient Greek epics with songs, stories and cycles from various cultures around the world, and explore how those stories have changed over time.We will get up close and personal with ancient Greek objects in the museum collection that reflect mythology and question why ancient cultures drew and painted their mythological stories. Were Greek vases viewed just like movies and games are by us?
We will meet the various heroes, humans, gods, goddesses and characters whom Odysseus met on his long journey home and get a chance to make our own versions of Odysseus and Penelope, Circe, Scylla & Charybdis, the Sirens and Polyphemus, the Cyclops. Why are the gods Athena, Zeus and Poseidon so important in the story? Then we will undertake our own journey of discovery through the museum’s complex labyrinth of layers!
We will create our own ancient Greek monster, and we will explore the art of ancient Greek and make our own stories.
Art, archaeology and storytelling will all be combined; and the day finishes with the group putting on a Greek play representing part of the myth of Odysseus.
