When Arlo Sim debuted on The Voice with a soulful rendition of Yebba’s My Mind, the response from the judges was unanimous. All four turned their chairs and vied to recruit him to their team.

With his pick of the judges, who include Keith Urban, Rita Ora, Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian, Arlo chose to join Team Keith.  It was a decision that has paid off well; last night Keith revealed he had choosen Arlo to compete in the show's Grand Finale.

Drawn to jazz

The former Newtown High School of the Performing Arts student has been a passionate music lover from a young age. His interest in jazz performance was borne out of an opportunity to perform in Schools Spectacular alongside jazz pianist and Con alumnus John Foreman.

“I think it was at that moment, I knew I wanted to study jazz at the Con," he remembers.

"The Conservatorium of Music has one of the most respected jazz programs in Australia and it seemed the logical choice”.

Prepared to perform

As a second year of the Bachelor of Music (Performance) student, Arlo is currently undertaking one of the oldest and most highly regarded jazz programs in Australia. Students are trained in improvisation, ensemble playing and repertoire development, supported by studies in aural, harmony and history.

“These skills have prepared me very well for the situations I am thrown into, for any performance situation really, but specifically The Voice,” explains Arlo.

“Having only a few hours to learn a tune, give it your own interpretation, and perform in front of your peers and on national television is pretty daunting. The course has definitely helped prepare me for these situations”.

Industry insider

Appearing on the show has allowed Arlo to begin building industry connections and experience the industry from the inside.

“Having the opportunity to work with such professional and experienced musicians is invaluable,” he reflects.

“Building connections with the band, backing vocalists and even the production team has led to potential long-time collaborations and for that, I am very grateful”.

Arlo will compete in the show's Grand Finale on September 12.
