Professor Yonghui Li has received a prestigious ARC Industry Laureate Fellowship to develop a revolutionary WiFi system, HoloFi, that transforms conventional WiFi networks into multifunctional ICT infrastructure.
Professor Julie Cairney, Interim Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) congratulated Professor Li on his Fellowship. “The Industry Laureate is among the highest regarded awards in Australian research,” she said. “To be recognised among the best in the country for research collaboration is a testament to Yonghui’s excellent translational research and the University of Sydney’s deep connections with our industry partners to spearhead solutions to society’s most pressing challenges.”
“The Faculty of Engineering continues to build its immense talent and leadership, and this Industry Laureate highlights the calibre of our research,” said Professor Hesham El Gamal, Dean.
“Professor Li’s fellowship reflects not just the strength, but the focus, ambition, and quality of our research community in seeking opportunities to conduct impactful research collaborations with industry. I extend my warmest congratulations.”
In collaboration with industry partners, Roobuck Pty Ltd and Galaverse, Professor Li’s project, Holographic WiFi for Digital Mining, will enable a single WiFi network to simultaneously provide inherent communication, situational awareness sensing, and distributed AI processing at scale, delivering a cost-effective ICT infrastructure.
By collaborating with key industry partners, the project ensures that research is grounded in real-world challenges and rapidly translatable into commercially viable solutions.

Strong industry-academic collaboration
Roobuck, a global leader in METS, and Galaverse, a leading communication chip design company, are the industry partners working with Professor Li and his team on the project.
“By collaborating with key industry partners, the project ensures that research is grounded in real-world challenges and rapidly translatable into commercially viable solutions,” he explains. “The active involvement of industry partners, from system design to field trials in operating mines, demonstrates how deep industry engagement enhances research impact, accelerates innovation translation, and delivers practical impact for both the mining sector and Australia’s broader innovation ecosystem.”
HoloFi is set to transform industrial connectivity by delivering a revolutionary WiFi technology with inherent communication, situation-awareness sensing and distributed AI processing capabilities, all within a single WiFi network, eliminating the need for external computing devices and sensors.
“It will enable a cost-effective and rapidly deployable comprehensive cyber physical infrastructure throughout the mines, serving as a crucial enabler for digital mining transformation,” shares Professor Li. “For Australia, this means safer, smarter, and more productive mining operations, critical for a sector contributing significantly to national GDP. Globally, HoloFi unlocks transformative applications across agriculture, energy, transport, and emergency services, enabling real-time decision-making, automation, and sustainability at scale.”
Professor Li is confident in the capabilities and strengths of the HoloFi project and its role in helping to grow digital innovation and contribute to Australia’s productivity. “By fostering talent and building commercial capacity, HoloFi not only boosts Australia’s digital competitiveness but also positions it at the forefront of next generation industrial wireless innovation.”
