Since the campus protest encampment was disbanded more than 18 months ago, we’ve taken strong and deliberate steps to create a safer and more respectful environment. This has included extensive collaboration with the Jewish community, a comprehensive independent review and the introduction of meaningful reforms. While reports of antisemitism have fallen significantly on campus, we know there is more work to do.
We’ve removed a variety of flags that were flown in breach of our policies. As part of our broader reforms we have updated our flag policy and unapproved flags of any kind can only be flown from University infrastructure on a temporary basis. Regarding recent media coverage in relation to the removal of flags, the individual who raised the flag was engaged by a contracted service provider. They were no longer permitted to perform further services for the University after they breached safety protocols by installing an unsafe structure that damaged a heritage sandstone building and accessing a restricted space without authorisation.
We engaged with multiple state and federal government agencies during the encampment, including writing to the federal Attorney-General in May 2024 on behalf of the Group of Eight universities asking for advice on particular phrases used during protests.
