The University of Sydney Chancellor David Thodey AO, and Vice-Chancellor and President Professor, Mark Scott's message to staff and students is below. 

Dear colleagues and students, 

The government has declared Thursday 22 January a National Day of Mourning to remember those who tragically lost their lives in last year’s horrific antisemitic attack at Bondi Beach, and to show our collective support for the Jewish community and everyone affected by the attack.

In recognition of the National Day of Mourning, and in solidarity with the community, the University will fly flags at half-mast and there will be a minute of silence at 7:01pm.  

This is a moment for compassion and kindness – and light. Light will win, a gathering of unity and remembrance is at the centre of the day, reflecting a commitment to hope, empathy and our shared humanity.

Through our shared humanity we recognise the distress and grief felt across the country and stand with the Jewish community in their moment of need. We reject all forms of racism and discrimination and oppose all expressions of antisemitism, and will continue to ensure our campuses are safe, respectful and places for all.

This remains a particularly difficult time for many and it’s important that we acknowledge the sadness that will continue to be felt across the community.

Support is available to all staff and their families, and we encourage you to reach out if you need help.

We encourage staff and students to download the SafeZone app to connect directly with Protective Services, emergency services and the University's support and wellbeing services. SafeZone sends real-time safety alerts, including location-specific information, to help our community stay safe. 

We urge anyone who feels unsafe or sees concerning behaviour on our campuses to let our Protective Services team know by using the SafeZone app or calling 1800 SYD HLP (1800 793 457), and to call 000 if it’s an emergency.
