Stephani Soro
Stephani Soro is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Engineering. She supports the Khuda Women in STEM Program at the University of Sydney.
My research investigates the vibro-acoustic behaviour of composite cross laminated timber (CLT) floor systems, with a focus on their dynamic and acoustic performance.
As cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings are increasingly adopted in modern construction, driven by the demand for sustainable and low-carbon alternatives to concrete and steel, understanding their acoustic performance has become critical. Owing to their lightweight nature, these systems are more susceptible to vibration and sound transmission.
However, current design approaches are constrained by limited data, often leading to conservative assumptions, costly remediation, and construction delays. My PhD aims to improve how acoustic performance is predicted and translated into practice, ultimately enhancing the experience of the people who live and work in these buildings.
I’m currently in the second year of my PhD. With my background in civil engineering and architecture, I was drawn to this area of research because it addresses the impact of structural design and occupant comfort.
I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney and worked closely with Daniel during my Honours year.
During that time, I developed a deep interest in research and began to see myself pursuing further study in civil engineering. What started as a broader interest in structures gradually evolved into my current focus on timber performance.

LinkDaniel’s experience in structural dynamics and computational modelling provides strong technical grounding for my research direction. He takes a multidisciplinary approach, which aligns closely with how I view our work and its broader impact. His ability to draw on diverse experiences brings depth and clarity to our work. In addition, I’d also like to acknowledge the generous support of Professor Luming Shen, who is my PhD co-supervisor.
My PhD experience has been defined as much by opportunity and connection as by technical research. Looking back on my first year, I’m surprised by how people-focused it was.
A PhD program offers a great deal of autonomy and using that freedom intentionally has enabled me to pursue my interests while building meaningful relationships with researchers, industry professionals, and students.
The flexibility of the program has allowed me to combine research with teaching, active industry collaboration, and involvement in initiatives such as the Khuda Women in STEM program, where mentorship and outreach are central.
Being able to communicate across these fields has been essential to progressing my work and taking advantage of multidisciplinary perspectives.
Throughout my journey so far, I have been drawn to giving back to the community, particularly by encouraging interest in STEM and contributing to science communication. The skills I’m developing through my PhD, both technical and interpersonal, can be applied across different sectors.
I’m keen to keep an open mindset about the future, but I am especially motivated by the impact my work can have on others.
I aim to build a career that advances sustainable construction while also mentoring others and making research more accessible to the wider community.

Associate Professor Daniel Dias-da-Costa
Associate Professor Daniel Dias-da-Costa is an academic in structural engineering in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Engineering. He is a member of the Net Zero Institute and Sydney Nano Institute.
I am a structural engineer working on structural performance, particularly dynamics and serviceability, using a mix of experiments and computational modelling.
My broader research also includes sustainable and self-healing materials and applied AI methods that support the design and assessment of real structures, with the aim of improving reliability and sustainability in practice.
PhD supervision is one of the most direct ways to build research capability in the field.
I enjoy seeing candidates grow in confidence and develop new skills, and I value the back-and-forth of sharing ideas and solving problems together. I also see supervision as career mentoring, helping candidates build a profile and opportunities so they can have real impact, and often those working relationships become long-term professional friendships.
A PhD is one of the few periods in your career where you have the freedom to explore deeply and create outcomes that matter.

So far, I have supervised 18 PhD candidates and nine MPhil candidates to completion. I currently supervise nine PhD candidates (including five as principal supervisor) and three postdoctoral researchers.
Stephani’s proposal targets an important practical problem: improving confidence in vibro-acoustic and vibration performance of CLT composite floor systems, where validated data and calibrated modelling tools are limited.
Reducing that uncertainty supports better design decisions and can help accelerate adoption of efficient hybrid timber systems. Stephani's plan links controlled experiments with calibrated modelling to produce design-oriented outcomes with direct interest to industry.
My advice to anyone studying a PhD or considering one is that a PhD comes in waves.
The key is to hold your nerve in the lows and ride the highs when they come. A PhD is one of the few periods in your career where you have the freedom to explore deeply and create outcomes that matter.
