The University's full statement is below (updated 29 April 2026).
It's completely unacceptable this article was published. We requested its urgent removal last week as we assess the matter under our complaints procedures, and we’ll take appropriate action if a breach of our policies or codes of conduct is identified.
While the Students’ Representative Council is responsible for all Honi Soit editorial decisions, the University is working to strengthen oversight and accountability.
We will meet with the SRC to make clear our expectation their role is to advance the interests of all undergraduate students, their responsibility for all Honi Soit content including autonomous collective editions, and that all our students including members of the SRC must abide by our policies and codes of conduct.
We are considering additional measures that may be required, including extending the independent editorial training provided annually by the Walkley Foundation to all editors of Honi Soit and members of SRC autonomous collectives.
We remain committed to ensuring our University is free from discrimination in any form. Since protest activity began over two years ago, we’ve worked hard to keep our campuses safe. While we didn’t get everything right, we’ve introduced meaningful reforms following community consultation and an independent review of our policies, and we know more needs to be done.
We’ll keep listening and working with our community, governments and the sector to act on concerns and build cohesion, trust and a sense of belonging.
Support is available to anyone who needs it.
