The Catherine Southwell-Keely Travel Grant
- Value: A$3,500
- Aim: to assist an eligible candidate requiring extensive travel, to pursue research in the archaeology of Egypt, Cyprus or Western Asia.
Availability
This scholarship is offered annually to one person.
Payment information
The value of this scholarship is A$3,500 (total amount). This award is to be used for travel.
Research information
This scholarship is for one of the following fields of research: Archaeology and Prehistory.
Eligibility
Applicants must be an honours student, a student undertaking a Higher Degree or a postdoctoral Early Career researcher.
Applicants must be part of an Australian or New Zealand University as a student, researcher, tutor, research assistant or affiliate or have held such a position within the last ten years.
Applicants must be undertaking research in the archaeology of Egypt, Cyprus or Western Asia and must demonstrate need for extensive travel, to pursue research in the above geographical areas. Furthermore, applicants must be applying for funding for a specific research project.
This scholarship is for study in countries except Australia.

About Sam Eames
Dr Sam Eames was a wonderful human being, important researcher and expert field archaeologist.
After completing her undergraduate degree in archaeology at the University of Sydney in 1992, Sam led best practice methods as a field archaeologist on archaeological excavations across the Near East and Italy. Pella in Jordan was like a second home, with Sam’s expert trowelling matched by her cracking humour and ability to get along with everyone she met.
Sam completed her PhD in 2001 despite being diagnosed with a terminal illness in 1997. With her broad smile, twinkle in her eye and a small WHS trowel in her hand, Sam’s contribution through thick and thin has helped pave the way for future generations of archaeologists. The Sam Eames Grant-In-Aid is set up to honour Sam.

Grant Guidelines
Specific requirements for NEAF:
- At the conclusion of your research project, you must forward original receipts to NEAF. If you are travelling, copies from your travel diary can verify some of the amounts, as we appreciate it isn’t always easy to get receipts.
- You are required to provide a short report (with one or two pictures if possible) for archival purposes and publication in the NEAF Bulletin.
- All previous grant recipients must have provided both receipts and reports to be considered eligible for further grants.
