Who's eligible

You must:

  • be an Honours or higher degree student, or a post-doctoral early career researcher and be part of an Australian or New Zealand University as a student, researcher, tutor, research assistant or affiliate, or have held such a position within the last ten years
  • be pursuing overseas archaeological site research in  geographical areas which the NEAF conducts research
  • be applying for a specific research project funding 
  • be applying for funding for expenses and support which can be planned for prior to spending.

Note: Preference will be given to applicants experiencing financial disadvantage.

This scholarship was established to assist recipients to pursue overseas archaeological research in the geographical areas in which the Near Eastern Archaeology Foundation (NEAF) from time to time conducts research.

Terms and Conditions

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established to assist recipients to pursue overseas archaeological research in the geographical areas in which the Near Eastern Archaeology Foundation (NEAF) from time to time conducts research.

b. This Scholarship has been donated by Leone Crawford.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Honours student, a student undertaking a Higher Degree or a post-doctoral Early Career researcher. Applicants must be part of an Australian or New Zealand University as a student, researcher, tutor, research assistant or affiliate or have held such a position within the last ten years.

b. Applicants must pursue overseas archaeological site research in the geographical areas in which the NEAF from time to time conducts research.

c. Applicants must be applying for funding for a specific research project.

d. The applicant must be applying for funding for expenses and support which can be planned for prior to spending.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. personal statement,
III. detailed budget and itinerary, including travel plans where relevant, and
IV. feedback from one academic referee.

b. Preference will be given to applicants experiencing financial disadvantage.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Director of Near Eastern Archaeology Foundation (NEAF), or their nominated delegate(s).

4. Value

a. The Scholarship will have a maximum value of $5,000. The exact amount of the scholarship will be outlined in the recipient’s Scholarship Offer Letter.

b. The Scholarship value will be paid as a lump sum payment on receipt of Scholarship Acceptance Form.

c. The travel supported by the scholarship can be deferred and/or suspended for up to one year with prior written approval from the Director of the NEAF.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, or
II. does not undertake the travel for which the funds have been approved within the required time frame.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a recipient is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
