Background

The award was established in 2008 in honour of Helga Pettitt’s 28 year commitment to the Sydney School of Health Sciences to support an alumnus enrolled in a master's by research or PhD in the University of Sydney School of Health Sciences.

1. Background

a. The Helga Pettitt Sydney School of Health Sciences Postgraduate Study Award is to support an alumnus enrolled in a master's by research or PhD in The University of Sydney School of Health Sciences.

b. The award was established in 2008 in honour of Helga Pettit’s 28-year commitment to the Sydney School of Health Sciences.

2. Eligibility

a. This award is offered subject to applicants having an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled in a master's by research or PhD within the Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must be undertaking research.

c. Applicants must be a graduate of the Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health in the University of Sydney.

d. Applicants must not have been a previous recipient of this award.

3. Selection criteria

a. The successful applicant will be awarded the scholarship on the basis of:

  1. academic merit
  2. summary of research proposal (200 words maximum)
  3. evidence of community participation or interdisciplinary nature of their research (200 words maximum)
  4. curriculum vitae
  5. letter of support from their supervisor
  6. a personal statement detailing how they intend to use the funds (500 words maximum).

b. Applicants may be requested to provide a recommendation from the relevant Head of Discipline.

c. The successful applicant will be awarded the scholarship on the nomination of the Head of School and Dean on the recommendation of a selection committee consisting of the Associate Dean Research Education and two Postgraduate Coordinators.

4. Value

a. The award has a value of $1500 and will be paid as a one off payment.

b. No other amount is payable.

c. The award will be awarded subject to the availability of funds.

5. Eligibility for progression

a. None apply.

6. Termination

a. The University reserves the right to withdraw the award, if the University determines that the student is guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information that has a relationship to the awarding of this award.

b. Once withdrawn, the award will not be reinstated.

7. Other requirement

a. Successful recipient(s) must provide a report on the progress of their research program before the conclusion of the year in which the award is offered.
