Benefits

The scholarship value will be determined by the Organic Chemistry Committee and is tenable for one year only.

This year the annual value will range between $500 and $4,000.

Who's eligible

You must:

  • be currently enrolled in a Master's by Research or PhD in the School of Chemistry 
  • be undertaking your research in the field of organic chemistry
  • have completed your honours degree in the previous year to be eligible for the Agnes Campbell Honours Prize.

Background

Established in I996 by a bequest from Jack Campbell Norrie to provide scholarships to students enrolled in a master's by research or PhD for research excellence in organic chemistry in the honours and postgraduate years. The name of each scholarship shall be the Agnes Campbell Prize.

The scholarship is awarded at two levels:

  1. Agnes Campbell Honours Prize
  2. Agnes Campbell Postgraduate Prize

1. Background

a. Established in 1996 by a bequest from Jack Campbell Norrie to provide scholarships to students enrolled in a Masters by Research or PhD for research excellence in Organic Chemistry in the Honours and postgraduate years. The name of each Scholarship shall be the Agnes Campbell Prize.

b. The Scholarship is awarded at two levels:

I. Agnes Campbell Honours Prize
II. Agnes Campbell Postgraduate Prize

c. The Agnes Campbell Prize will be managed as a Scholarship following the University of Sydney Scholarships and Recognition Awards Policy 2016.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant being currently enrolled in a Masters by Research or PhD in the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must be undertaking their research in the field of organic chemistry.

c. Applicants who have completed their honours degree in the previous year of award are eligible for the Agnes Campbell Honours Prize.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit, and
II. research output.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of the School of Chemistry on the recommendation of a Scholarship Committee comprising the Professors and Associate Professors in the discipline area Organic Chemistry.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship Committee will determine the number and value of Scholarships. The amount awarded will be indicated in the Scholarship letter of offer.

b. The scholarships will be for one year and their value shall be determined by the Scholarship Committee.

c. The value of the Scholarships awarded will range from $500 to $4000.

d. The Scholarship annual value will be paid upon award.

e. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of School, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval.

f. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

g. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. None Required.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
IV. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or
V. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. The Scholarship may also be terminated by the University before this time if, in the opinion of the University:

I. the course of study is not being carried out with competence and diligence or in accordance with the terms of this offer,
II. the student fails to maintain satisfactory progress, or
III. the student has committed misconduct or other inappropriate conduct.

c. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

7. Misconduct

a. Where during the Scholarship a student engages in misconduct, or other inappropriate conduct (either during the Scholarship or in connection with the student’s application and eligibility for the Scholarship), which in the opinion of the University warrants recovery of funds provided, the University may require the student to repay payments made in connection with the Scholarship. Examples of such conduct include and without limitation; academic dishonesty, research misconduct within the meaning of the Research Code of Conduct (for example, plagiarism in proposing, carrying out or reporting the results of research, or failure to declare or manage a serious conflict of interests), breach of the Code of Conduct for Students and misrepresentation in the application materials or other documentation associated with the Scholarship.

b. The University may require such repayment at any time during or after the Scholarship period. In addition, by accepting this Scholarship, the student consents to all aspects of any investigation into misconduct in connection with this Scholarship being disclosed by the University to the funding body and/or any relevant professional body.
