Who's eligible

You must:

  • be enrolled in your third year of an undergraduate degree
  • majoring in the mathematical sciences or a cognate discipline (outstanding second-year students with the written support of the department will also be considered)
  • have been successful in your application to Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and approved by the Head of School, School of Mathematics and Statistics
  • be eligible to enrol in the unit of study: Science Research Experience (SCRE3901).

Note: Applicants who have previously participated in an AMSI vacation research project are not eligible.

Background

This scholarship was established in partnership with AMSI and the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney to provide students with an opportunity to complete a supervised vacation research project in the mathematical sciences.

The aim of the scholarship is to provide students with a unique educational experience for those considering honours or master's courses in the mathematical sciences as well as partially cover expenses that may be incurred during the project.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in partnership with the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney to provide students with an opportunity to complete a supervised vacation research project in the mathematical sciences.

b. The aim of the Scholarship is to provide students with a unique educational experience for those considering honours or masters years in the mathematical sciences as well as partially cover expenses that may be incurred during the project.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant being currently enrolled at the University of Sydney, in their third undergraduate year majoring in the mathematical sciences or a cognate discipline (outstanding second-year students with the written support of their department will also be considered).

b. Applicants must have been successful in their application to AMSI and approved by the Head of School, School of Mathematics and Statistics.

c. Applicants must be eligible to enrol in the unit of study Science Research Experience - SCRE3901.

d. Applicants who have previously participated in an AMSI vacation research project are not eligible.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and successful application to AMSI.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of AMSI and Head of School, School of Mathematics and Statistics.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued up to $3,500. The exact value will be stipulated in the Offer Letter.

b. The Scholarship will be paid in two equal instalments, the first occurring within 3 weeks of commencing the project and the second occurring once a final report and blog post is submitted at the conclusion of the project. The actual payment schedule will be provided in the offer letter.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted, and it is not transferable to another university faculty or university without prior approval.

d. Students who participate in a placement do so on a voluntary basis. No employment relationship is created between participating students and the University.

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing Eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must enrol and continue to be enrolled in SCRE3901 for the duration of the project.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from the AMSI Vacation Research Scholarship program,
II. withdraws from their eligible course or fails to enrol,
III. withdraws from or fails to enrol in SCRE3901,
IV. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, or does not meet the requirements of the placement unit of study SCRE3901,
V. undertakes an additional vacation or summer research placement during the tenure of this Scholarship,
VI. commences or continues to undertake employment (paid or otherwise) that interferes with their ability to complete the project,
VII. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, or
VIII. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless the termination was due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.

7. Other

a. Recipients must present their research at the virtual AMSIConnent event.
