1. Background
a. This scholarship has been established to support high-performing undergraduate students who are conducting chemistry experimental research from August to November at the University of Sydney under the supervision of Dr Haihui Joy Jiang.
b. The Scholarship is funded by research funds of Dr Haihui Joy Jiang of the School of Chemistry through the Selby Research Award.
2. Eligibility
a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant being currently enrolled in full-time or part-time undergraduate degree (including Honours) in either Faculty of Science or Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney.
b. Applicants must have a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 80 or above.
c. Applicants must be majoring in chemistry or a materials science-related discipline (e.g. Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or Biomedical Engineering) at the University of Sydney.
3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. academic merit (transcripts),
II. academic CV including prior research experience, and
III. an interview.
b. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate:
I. A strong knowledge in undergraduate Chemistry, have previously completed CHEM1 and CHEM2 units, and are currently studying (or have previously completed) CHEM3 Units.
II. Prior research experience in Chemistry, Physics, or Engineering,
III. Relevant research and experimental skills.
c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the relevant research supervisor of the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney.
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $2,000 and payable as one-off payment once the student has completed the required training and commenced experimental component of their project, as confirmed by the relevant research supervisor.
b. If recipients plan to conduct part time research, they must seek prior approval from supervisor Dr Haihui Joy Jiang of the School of Chemistry. The payments will be paid on a pro-rata basis.
c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted and it is not transferable to another area of research, University school, faculty or university without prior approval.
d. Suspension of the scholarship is permitted for up to six months with prior approval from Dr Haihui Joy Jiang.
e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
f. No other amount is payable.
5. Termination
a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. withdraws or transfers from the research project without prior approval,
III. does not maintain satisfactory research performance,
IV. does not conduct research according to the agreed schedule,
V. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
