  • a recent school leaver and having an unconditional offer of admission in full-time in an undergraduate degree (including combined or double degrees) in the Faculty of Science, undertaking Physical Science studies
  • not have deferred or have undertaken a gap year.

Background

Established in 2025 in memory of Edward Deas Thomson, former Chancellor of the University of Sydney, to support students undertaking physical science studies in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

This scholarship is funded by the Deas Thomson Scholarship gift, received in 1854.
 

1. Background

a. Established in 2025 in memory of Edward Deas Thomson, former Chancellor of the University of Sydney, to support students undertaking physical science studies in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

b. This scholarship is funded by the Deas Thomson Scholarship gift, received in 1854.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant being a recent school leaver and having an unconditional offer of admission in full-time in an undergraduate degree (including combined or double degrees) in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.
b. Applicants must be a domestic student.

c. Applicants who have deferred or have undertaken a gap year are not eligible.

d. It is a condition of accepting this Scholarship that awardees enrol in at least 12 credit points of Physical Science (i.e., physics, chemistry, geology, environmental studies and environmental science) units of study during their first year of enrolment and subsequently major in one of the above areas.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit and
II. response to relevant questions asked in the University of Sydney commencing domestic student scholarships application form.

b. Preference may be given to students who demonstrate at least one of the following:
I. carer responsibilities,
II. financial challenges,
III. long-term medical condition/disability or ongoing effects of abuse,
IV. living in regional or remote area of Australia, and/or
V. identity as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of Dean of the Faculty of Science, or their nominated delegate.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $8,000 per annum and is tenable for up to three years.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean of Science (or nominated delegate), and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. Recipients must enrol in 12 credit points of Physical Science (i.e., physics, chemistry, geology, environmental studies and environmental science) units of study during their first year of enrolment and subsequently major in one of the above areas.

b. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must meet the requirements of their Honours program.

c. If recipients enrol part-time in their degree, they must seek prior approval to hold the scholarship on a part-time basis. The payments may be paid on a pro-rata basis.

d. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval of the Head of School, Sydney School of Veterinary Science,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
