Who's eligible

You must:

  • be an Applicants must be Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident, or New Zealand Citizen
  • be commencing an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science, or a double or combined undergraduate degree within the Faculty of Science
  • have achieved an ATAR (or equivalent) of at least 90.00 in the NSW HSC (or equivalent) in the year of application. 

Background

Established in 2015, this Scholarship has been generously donated by the Rip Curl Group in memory and legacy of renowned businessman James Strong. The Scholarship provides financial support to enable students focus on their studies in an undergraduate degree at the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

1. Background

a. Established in 2015, this Scholarship has been generously donated by the Rip Curl Group in memory and legacy of renowned businessman James Strong. The Scholarship provides financial support to enable students focus on their studies in an undergraduate degree at the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident, or New Zealand Citizen.

b. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant being a recent school leaver and having an unconditional offer of admission in full-time in an undergraduate degree (including combined and double degrees) within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney (subject to deferral as stated in Clause 4c).

c. Applicants must have achieved an ATAR or equivalent of at least 90.00 in the HSC or equivalent.
d. Applicants who have deferred or have undertaken a gap year are not eligible.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit, and
II. personal statements relating to academic achievements, extra-curricular activities or activities outside of the classroom, and leadership.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, or their nominated delegate/s.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $7,500 per annum and is tenable for one year.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. Commencement of the Scholarship can be deferred for up to two years. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Science or their nominated delegate, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing Eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum SAM of 75 each semester.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney on the basis of general academic merit (see 6.b. and 6.c.); in such circumstances, this Scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative scholarship where the alternative scholarship is of equal or higher value,
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or
VII. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. For the purposes of 6(a)(v), an alternative scholarship includes:

I. the Chancellor’s Award and
II. the Sir Lionel Hooke Scholarship

c. As an exception to 6(a)(v), the following Scholarship/s may be held concurrently with this Scholarship:

I. the Liversidge Scholarship

d. Notwithstanding 6(a)(v), the Dean of Science, or their nominee, may permit an applicant to concurrently hold an alternative scholarship of equal or higher value awarded on the basis of hardship or equity alongsid this Scholarship.

e. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

f. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
