  • have an unconditional offer of full-time admission for appended honours study within the Bachelor of Science (Honours), or embedded honours study within the Bachelor of Advanced Studies
  • have the highest grades in your third and final year of the Bachelor of Science.

You are not eligible if you are in a combined or double degree.

Background

Established in 1905 by a gift from Mrs Jane Coutts in memory of her son, Mr John Coutts (a graduate of the University of Sydney), this scholarship provides financial support to students of outstanding academic merit undertaking honours study in the Faculty of Science.

1. Background

a. Established in 1905 by a gift from Mrs Jane Coutts in memory of her son, Mr John Coutts who was a graduate of the University of Sydney, this Scholarship provides financial support to students of outstanding academic merit undertaking honours study in the Faculty of Science.

2. Eligibility

a. To be eligible for the Scholarship, applicants must be the student with the highest grades in their third and final year of the Bachelor of Science, who have an unconditional offer of fulltime admission for one of the following program in the year of consideration:

  1. appended honours study within the Bachelor of Science (Honours), or
  2. embedded honours study within the Bachelor of Advanced Studies.

b. Applicants in combined or double degrees are ineligible.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit determined by the recipient’s Average Annual Mark (AAM) in their final year of study. The recipient’s Science Weighted Average Mark (SCIWAM) may also be considered.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of the Dean of the Faculty of Science, or their nominated delegate.

4. Value

b. The Scholarship is valued at $7,500 and is tenable for one year only.

c. The Scholarship value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each relevant semester.

d. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean of Science (or nominated delegate), and it is not transferable to another faculty, University School or university.

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum SAM of 65 for any coursework units of study required as part of their honours program. The recipient must maintain full-time enrolment in their eligible honours program.

b. Requests to reduce to part-time study or to suspend the Scholarship shall not be granted, except with the prior approval of the Dean of Science, or their nominated delegate.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

  1. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
  2.  commences part-time study without prior approval, 
  3. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, 
  4. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
  5. is awarded an alternative primary scholarship. In such circumstances this scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative scholarship where the alternative scholarship is of higher value, 
  6. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or 
  7. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
