Who's eligible

You must:

  • be an Australian Citizen, New Zealand Citizen, or Australian Permanent Resident
  • have an unconditional offer of admission into an Honours degree at the University of Sydney, and a School endorsed place in the Psychology Honours program
  • be currently enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Psychology Honours within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney and meet the requirement of this degree to progress to the Honours year
  • demonstrate financial hardship.

Background

This scholarship is established to honour Professor Emerita Sally Andrews, who sadly passed away in 2022. During her 20-year tenure at the University of Sydney, Sally distinguished herself as an academic and as Head of School for her dedication to research and education in Psychology and Science more broadly.

This scholarship has been established from the generous donation of the Lucy Firth Bequest (Psychology) to honour Professor Sally Andrews and support future leaders in Psychology.

1. Background

a. This scholarship is established to honour Professor Emerita Sally Andrews, who sadly passed away in 2022. During her 20-year tenure at the University of Sydney, Sally distinguished herself an academic and as Head of School for her dedication to research and education in Psychology and Science more broadly.

b. Through the generous donations of the Lucy Firth - Bequest (Psychology) we honour Professor Sally Andrews by establishing an honours scholarship to support future leaders in Psychology.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, New Zealand Citizen, or Australian Permanent Resident.
b. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant:
I. Having an unconditional offer of admission into an Honours degree at the University of Sydney, and a School endorsed place in the Psychology Honours program, or
II. being currently enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Psychology Honours within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney and have meet the requirement of this degree to progress to the Honours year.

c. Applicant must be able to demonstrate financial hardship.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit (transcript),
II. evidence of financial hardship (Centrelink Statement), and
III. personal statement outlining your reasons for pursuing Honours in Psychology, and how this scholarship will help you achieve your goals.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of the School of Psychology, or their nominated delegates.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $7000 per annum and is tenable for one year.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of School, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must be on track to meet the requirements of the Psychology Honours program.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $6,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship such as the University of Sydney Honours Scholarship, or
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
