This scholarship aims to support domestic students experiencing financial, medical or geographic disadvantage who are interested in careers in insurance and are in their penultimate year of undergraduate degree.

This scholarship will pay an incentive based on the student's academic performance, as measured by the Weighted Average Mark (WAM) on their internal transcript. This is known as the WAM Payment, and will be paid as follows:

1. Background
a. Established in 2022, this Scholarship has been sponsored by Gen Re, a multinational reinsurer, to support domestic students through the final two years of their degree with direct financial support.
2. Eligibility
a. Applicants must be a domestic student currently enrolled in their penultimate year of study in an undergraduate coursework degree within:
a. The University of Sydney Business School, with a preference for majors in Finance or Business Analytics;
b. The Faculty of Science, with a preference for majors in Computer Science, Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, or Psychology;
c. The Faculty of Engineering; or
d. The Faculty of Medicine and Health.
b. Applicants must be able to demonstrate one or more of the following:
a. Financial disadvantage;
b. Medical disadvantage or disability;
c. Geographic disadvantage (having originally resided in a rural or remote location)
d. Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student; or
e. Humanitarian visa holder.
3. Selection Criteria
a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. a personal statement demonstrating motivation,
II. demonstrated equity grounds described in 2b, and
III. an interview.
b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the University of Sydney Business School, or their nominee, on the recommendation of the interview panel, which will consist of a representative of the Business School, a representative from a relevant Faculty, and a representative from Gen Re.
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at up to $7,500 per annum for two years.
b. The Scholarship will be paid in equal instalments after the census date of each semester.
c. The Scholarship will pay an incentive based on the student’s academic performance, as measured by the Weighted Average Mark (WAM) on their internal transcript. This is known as a WAM Payment, and will be paid as follows:
I. $1,500 if the WAM for the completed semester is higher than the WAM in the semester immediately prior. This is applicable to the first two semesters only (first year of scholarship).
II. $2,000 if the WAM for the completed semester is higher than the WAM in the semester immediately prior. This is applicable to the next two semesters only (second year of scholarship).
III. Students who achieve a SR grade while on exchange will still receive the WAM payment.
d. The Scholarship will provide an Allowable Expenses payment of up to $3,000 (across the scholarship duration) for costs incurred to further the Scholarship recipient’s studies or readiness for work upon graduation. This includes but is not limited to computer hardware and office supplies, office attire, textbooks, and other reasonable expenses incurred in the course of study or work. Claims can be made as per instruction in section 5d of this document.
e. Deferral or Suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted.
f. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
g. No other amount is payable.
5. Ongoing eligibility
a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum SAM of 65 each semester.
b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment
c. To receive the WAM payments described in 4c, the current WAM in the Internal Transcript must be higher than the WAM in the semester immediately prior.
d. To receive the Allowable Expenses payments described in 4d, the Scholarship recipient must submit claims for these expenses in writing to the University of Sydney Business School at business.scholarships@sydney.edu.au, providing reasonable evidence including tax invoices or receipts to substantiate the claim and a brief explanation of the intended use. The student may also claim expenses in advance to incurring such expenses. The student may make a claim once a year, by October 1st.
6. Termination
a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave,
VII. fails to complete the internship with Gen Re, or
VIII. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
