Go Foundation (Honours) Scholarship

1. Background

a. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at the University of Sydney.

b. The scholarship was established in 2026 and is funded from a gift from the Goodes O’Loughlin (GO) Foundation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

2. Eligibility criteria

a. Applicants must be enrolled in an honours year of study in a degree at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015. (as amended or replaced).

3. Selection criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of a personal statement that details:

i. How the scholarship will support their studies,

ii. The student’s aspiration to work hard and achieve,

iii. The student’s strong cultural identity or a desire to understand more regarding their cultural heritage,

iv. Their active engagement within community, participating/undertaking community service, volunteer work or other similar extracurricular activities or memberships in organisations which undertake such activities.

b. As at the commencement of receipt of the Scholarship and for its duration, they are a student in good standing with the University.

c. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate financial hardship.

d. Academic merit may be taken into consideration by the Selection Committee.

e. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee consisting of the:

i. the Deputy Vice Chancellor - Indigenous Strategy and Services (DVC-ISS) (Chair) or their nominated delegate,

ii. at least one Associate Dean of Indigenous Strategy and Services (AD-ISS),

iii. a Gadigal Centre staff member, and

iv. at least half the members of the selection committee must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015.

4. Value

a. The scholarship provides a cash payment of AUD $10,000 per year and is tenable for a maximum duration of one (1) year.

b. Recipients who are enrolled in part-time study (less than 18 credit points in a semester) will receive Scholarship benefits at the rate of 50% of the full-time benefit for the period of part-time study.

c. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain satisfactory academic progress (pass), consistent with the University’s academic progression requirements.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

6. Deferral and suspension

a. Deferral of the scholarship is not permitted.

b. Suspension of the scholarship is permitted for up to one semester provided the recipient is permitted to, or obtains approval to, suspend their degree.

c. Requests for suspension of the scholarship for more than one semester will be considered, and if appropriate approved, on a case-by-case basis by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy and Services) or their nominee.

7. Transfer of degree

a. The scholarship is not transferrable.

8. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

i. no longer meet the Eligibility Criteria, or any other requirement set out in the Scholarship Details or Terms and Conditions; 

ii. breaches any Terms and Conditions;

iii. withdraws from their enrolled degree or fails to re-enrol at the end of permitted or approved deferral or suspension;

iv. does not maintain satisfactory academic progress (pass), consistent with the University’s academic progression requirements;

v. exceeds the maximum total duration of study supported by the Scholarship; 

vi. the recipient was awarded in error; or

vii. The funds are reduced or cease to be available.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of misconduct, the University reserves the right to request reimbursement of any Scholarship funds paid.

9. Privacy

a. The University collects and uses recipients’ personal information for the purpose of administering and maintaining the Scholarship, the University’s scholarship processes and for making Scholarship payments to the recipient, in accordance with the University’s business requirements and legal obligations.
