Who's eligible

You must:

  • be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident
  • be a school leaver
  • apply for a University of Sydney undergraduate degree through the UAC in the year you undertake the NSW HSC or equivalent
  • have attended a rural high school identified by the UAC educational disadvantage code "SO1C"
  • have expeirenced financial hardship and one or more of the following categories of disadvantage:
    • severe family disruption,
    • excessive family responsibilities,
    • personal injury / disability,
    • refugee status,
    • school environment, or
    • socio-economic disadvantage.    
  • intend to enrol full-time unless under extenuating circumstances.

Background

This Scholarship was established from a gift from Chancellor Belinda Hutchinson, AC and Mr Roger Massy-Greene, AM and is intended to support rural students who have experienced disadvantage.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established from a gift from Chancellor Belinda Hutchinson, AC and Mr Roger Massy-Greene, AM and is intended to support rural students who have experienced disadvantage.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident,

b. Applicants must be a school leaver,

c. Applicants must apply for a University of Sydney undergraduate degree through the UAC in the year they undertake the NSW HSC or equivalent,

d. Applicants must have attended a rural high school identified by the UAC educational disadvantage code “SO1C”,

e. Applicants must have experienced financial hardship and one or more of the following categories of disadvantage:

I. severe family disruption,
II. excessive family responsibilities,
III. personal injury / disability,
IV. refugee status,
V. school environment, or
VI. socio-economic disadvantage.

f. Applicants must intend to enrol full-time unless under extenuating circumstances.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,
II. demonstrated financial hardship and other disadvantages listed in 2d.,
III. a personal statement, and
IV. an interview.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by a committee chaired by Director, Sydney Future Student or their nominee, and consisting of a representative of Sydney Future Students, the Advancement Portfolio, and/or a faculty/University School.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $8,000 per annum and is tenable for the normal duration of the recipient’s degree (including combined degrees), for up to five years.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted.

d. Suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted.

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must enrol full-time each semester and maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 65 each semester.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval,
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
