Benefits

This scholarship will provide a one-off payment of $AUD 5000 for one year.

Who's eligible

You must:

  • be a domestic or international student
  • be enrolled in a joint PhD program at the University of Sydney, where the University of Sydney is the your home institution
  • be enrolled at one of University of Sydney’s active international partners as the host institution1
  • have a fully executed individual Student Agreement (as defined in the Dual and Joint Degree Policy 2019)
  • have completed their annual progress evaluation and have received a ‘meets/exceeds’ at your most recent progress review
  • only apply to Sydney Global Mobility for this scholarship once your offshore component of your Joint PhD Program has been confirmed
  • not have previously received this scholarship
  • not be under examination are not eligible.

Applicants who have not yet completed a progress review are eligible to apply.

This Joint PhD Travel Scholarship does not apply to the joint PhD program with the Group of Eight, it is only applicable to University of Sydney’s active international partners. Background

This Joint PhD Mobility scholarship was established in 2022 to assist students to complete the offshore component of their Joint PhD Program.

1. Background

a. This Joint PhD Mobility Scholarship was established in 2022 to assist students to complete the offshore component of their Joint PhD Program.

b. This Scholarship has been funded by Sydney Global Mobility.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered to full-time and part-time Applicants enrolled in a Joint PhD program at the University of Sydney, where the University of Sydney is the applicant’s home institution.

b. Applicants must also be enrolled at one of University of Sydney’s active international partners as the host institution.

This Joint PhD Travel Scholarship does not apply to the joint PhD program with the Group of Eight, it is only applicable to University of Sydney’s active international partners. I. Evidence of airfare
II. A letter from their home and host supervisor confirming the start date, proposed duration (minimum 3 months) and location of their offshore component.

g. Applicants who have previously received this Scholarship are not eligible.

h. Applicants under examination are not eligible.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded to any applicant enrolled in the program, that meets the eligibility criteria and is enrolled in an eligible Joint PhD program, except where funding is limited. In such instances, preference will be given to applicants on the basis of:

I. advancement in candidature;
II. previous research and publications; and
III. academic referee reports.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Associate Director, Sydney Global Mobility, or their nominated delegate on the recommendation of the applicant’s supervisor at the University of Sydney and relevant Head of School.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship will have a value of $AUD 5,000 per annum for one year, subject to satisfactory academic performance..

b. The Scholarship will be paid in one instalment, no earlier than three months prior to the confirmed date of departure..

c. The Scholarship is not transferrable to another University, Faculty, University School, award course or research area without prior approval of Sydney Global Mobility.

d. The recipient must seek approval of Sydney Global Mobility, if their travel plans have changed. Failing to seek approval may result in termination of this scholarship and repayment of the scholarship may be required. Sydney Global Mobility will decide based on the circumstances of each case.

e. No other amount is payable.

f. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funding.

5. Eligibility for Progression

a. Progression is subject to attending and passing the annual progress evaluation.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated:

I. upon withdrawal of the recipient from the Joint PhD program or failure to maintain enrolment at the host institution;
II. upon submission of the thesis or at the end of the award;
III. following the recipient’s failure to seek approval from Sydney Global Mobility, where their travel plans have changed.
IV. if the recipient ceases to meet the eligibility requirements and approvals specified for this Scholarship,

b. The Scholarship may also be terminated by the University before this time if, in the opinion of the University:

I. the course of study is not being carried out with competence and diligence or in accordance with the terms of this offer,
II. the student fails to maintain satisfactory progress, or
III. the student has committed misconduct or other inappropriate conduct at either the home or host institution.

c. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

7. Misconduct

a. Where during the Scholarship a student engages in misconduct, or other inappropriate conduct (either during the Scholarship or in connection with the student’s application and eligibility for the Scholarship), which in the opinion of the University warrants recovery of funds provided, the University may require the student to repay payments made in connection with the Scholarship. Examples of such conduct include and without limitation; academic dishonesty, research misconduct within the meaning of the Research Code of Conduct (for example, plagiarism in proposing, carrying out or reporting the results of research, or failure to declare or manage a serious conflict of interests), breach of the Code of Conduct for Students and misrepresentation in the application materials or other documentation associated with the Scholarship.

b. The University may require such repayment at any time during or after the Scholarship period. In addition, by accepting this Scholarship, the student consents to all aspects of any investigation into misconduct in connection with this Scholarship being disclosed by the University to the funding body and/or any relevant professional body.
