Who's eligible

You must:

  • have applied for admission to an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework program at the University of Sydney by the application's closing date; or be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree or postgraduate coursework program at the University of Sydney.
  • be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015.

Background

This scholarship has been established from a donation from The Rotary Soukup Memorial Scholarship Foundation.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2022 to provide assist indigenous students undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate coursework studies at the University of Sydney.

b. This Scholarship has been donated by The Rotary Soukup Memorial Scholarship Foundation.

2. Eligibility

a. The applicant must:

I. have applied for admission to an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework program at the University of Sydney by the application's closing date; or
II. be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree or postgraduate coursework program at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded based on:

I. academic merit, and
II. a personal statement that describes how this scholarship will assist the applicant with their studies. 

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Indigenous Strategy and Service (DVCISS) and/or their nominated delegates.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $8,000 per annum and is tenable for the duration of their degree.

b. Successful recipients will receive a one-off payment of $2,000 to support education costs in the first year. 

c. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester. 

d. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Scholarships Office and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval. 

e. The Scholarship recipient must enrol full-time during the tenure of their scholarship. Recipients may hold the scholarship part-time due to extenuating circumstances such as a medical condition which limits the student’s capacity to undertake full-time study. An application for a part-time scholarship must be submitted to the Gadigal Centre for DVCISS consideration. If a part-time scholarship is approved, payment will be 50% of the amount of the normal semester payment

f. The Scholarship may be suspended under extenuating circumstances. Approval for suspension is on a case-by-case basis upon application to the Gadigal Centre for DVCISS consideration.

g. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

h. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 65 each semester. 

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment. 

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval, 
III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, 
IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, 
V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.  

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
