SCIENCE AND CONSERVATION PROJECTS
Kiwi Chick Nutrition
Collaborating with Kiwis for Kiwi husbandry expert, Claire Travers, I am analysing the nutrition needs of hatchlings from three species of threatened kiwi, Brown Kiwi (Apteryx mantelli), Rowi (Apteryx rowi), and Haast tokoeka (Apteryx australis). My research is informing Claire’s performance evaluation of the recently introduced ZAA National Kiwi Diet.
Kiwi Husbandry & Operation Nest Egg (ONE) Working Group
For the last year and a half I’ve been providing consulting advice and training to kiwi ONE captive management facilities across New Zealand. My work has identified key skill and staffing gaps, and has culminated in the in formation of the ONE Working Group. Our group is tasked with strategically and consultatively addressing these issues. I am now contracted by the Department of Conservation to deliver a national ONE auditing framework for an upcoming major review of ONE Wildlife Act permitting by the Department. Hidden Past of the Macleay Kakapo
Continuing my 2016 Macleay Miklouho-Maclay Fellowship project on New Zealand’s endangered parrot, the Kakapo (Strigops hapbrotilus), I am working with Caitlin Mudge and Jeremy Austin (Australian Centre for Ancient DNA) to determine the provenance of the precious Macleay Kakapo study skins using ancient DNA techniques. Caitlin has managed to generate near-entire mtDNA genomes for all the specimens. Her preliminary aDNA work corroborates our 2016 findings (based on archival and botanical evidence) that the specimens were collected from Westland and Fiordland.
NSW Land-clearing and Threatened Species
Working with the NSW Conservation Council and the WWF, I am using remote sensing and GIS to quantify clearing of native bushland across NSW, and evaluate the impacts of clearing on threatened species. For more details see, https://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/revved-up-land-being-cleared-at-the-rate-of-14-football-fields-a-day-in-northern-nsw-20180906-p5026l.html
SCIENCE COMMUNICATION PROJECTS
Science Television Presenting
I work as a Presenter on Channel 7’s children’s science and maths program Get Clever. Season 1 went to air May 2018, and we are now filming stories for Season 2. Beyond hosting, my role involves pitching and researching stories, fact-checking scripts, and digital content production.
Bug Club Mobile Laboratory
I collaborate with the Springwood Neighbour Centre’s Imedla Eames, and helped found their Sunday STEAM (science, technology, education, arts, maths) program. On select Sundays throughout the year, we transform the Centre into a curiosity driven biology laboratory, replete with museum specimens, microscopes and guest-scientist presenters. The popularity of Bug Club has led to me being contracted by the Royal Botanic Garden, the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, and the Blue Mountains City Council to deliver my mobile laboratory activities at public science events.
NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM PROJECTS
Working with Rosanne Quinnell (SoLES) and Jude Philp (Macleay Museum), we are digitising the historical Haswell Zoological Museum. This SoLES teaching collection was established by the University of Sydney's first Professor of Zoology, William Haswell, and has been contributed to by notable Sydney zoologists ever since.
