Evidence-based strategies to improve the wellbeing of teachers

The HEART Research Group aims to better understand and improve the wellbeing, effectiveness, and long-term career outcomes of teachers. Our research highlights the challenges teachers face and identifies evidence-based strategies to support them across all career stages.

We are committed to ensuring that our work has real-world impact. By partnering with education departments, schools, and other stakeholders, we aim to influence educational policy and practice for the benefit of teachers, their students and schools, and the wider educational system.

A key part of our mission is to nurture early career researchers by offering mentoring and spaces to share their work. We believe the future of educational research depends on cultivating the next generation of research leaders in the field.

We also create public-facing resources to make our research more accessible and engaging, such as animations and infographics that share insights in clear, visual formats.

Our research

Each member and their research teams engage in various projects around three themes.

We examine the psychological, emotional, and physical wellbeing of teachers, exploring how workplace conditions, leadership, and policy influence their experience and performance.

Watch our animation about teacher wellbeing, the time gremlin and high workload.

Our research investigates what makes teaching effective, focusing on teacher practices, student outcomes, and the learning environment, with an eye on long-term career development.

We study the factors that influence teachers’ decisions to stay in or leave the profession, and we work to identify interventions and support mechanisms that promote sustained engagement in teaching.
